Keep It Cool
| What better place to shine the global spotlight on the hot topic of climate change than from the highest spot of the coldest place on Earth?
That’s what Cairns climbers Craig Roberts and Jay Finucane intend to do by climbing Vinson Massif, which at 5,104 metres above sea level is the highest peak in Antarctica. With the support and encouragement of Robert Swan (OBE and founder of 2041), they will use this extreme challenge as a vehicle to highlight to the broader community the stunning beauty of Antarctica and the vital importance of preserving this pristine environment. Craig and Jay have been climbing and mountaineering together, in some of the Earth’s most beautiful and pristine environments, for over a decade. Over this time they have unfortunately witnessed first hand the effects of global warming and climate change, mainly through the dwindling access to mountains and to rapidly receding glaciers. This has led to a feeling of responsibility to make people aware of just what our reliance on fossil fuels and our current unsustainable practices are doing to our precious and fragile planet and its ecosystems. With Swan as their mentor, the “Keep it Cool” team will embark on a mission that aims to build on Swan’s movement to underpin continued environmental protection of Antarctica. In 2041 the Protocol on Environmental Protection to the Antarctic Treaty could be ammended, which would allow this last great wilderness on Earth to be exploited. It is for this reason why it is so important to inform, engage and inspire people; particulary the youth, of today as, according to Swan, it will be they who will make decisions which will impact our entire planet’s ecosystem and the future of life on earth. The “Keep it Cool” expedition will be a lightweight alpine style attempt with a three man team moving fast with no fixed ropes. They will traverse remote ice caps and glaciers in the coldest, driest and windiest place on earth. |

| In this extreme challenge the team will be climbing independently and as such will need to be completely self-sufficient. The expense of such an expedition is almost as immense as the pysical challenge it presents. In addition to the fantastic support already received from our generous sponsors an amount of $70,000 needs to be raised.
In promoting the expedition “Keep it Cool” will conduct talks and presentations to schools, clubs and businesses promoting renewable and sustainable energy sources. As well, an extensive media campaign with print, radio and television and social networking/facebook page will be created and maintained to draw attention to the issue. |
